Summer is the perfect time to share a story of a garden gnome. Two sisters lay in bed at night and imagine all the trouble their garden gnome could get into. He only comes out at night, so the sisters have never seen any of his antics, but imagine them to be quite grand.
Murphy McWoo explores the garden and backyard of the two sisters. He is scolded by fairies, digs tunnels in the sandbox, and is chased by the neighbor’s dog. The story is told through creative and silly rhyming verse. I’m always fascinated by authors who can create such interesting stories through rhyme. The sisters have wild ideas that Murphy McWoo must be misbehaving and causing trouble in the yard at night. They make up silly adventures that leave them giggling into the night.
This story is super cute and your family might just have to get your own garden gnome to add to your backyard. I love that the sisters share their vivid imagination and then encourage readers to come up with their own tales of adventure for Murphy McWoo.
The illustrations are bright and colorful and fill the pages. Murphy is an adorable gnome and kids will love spotting him on the pages among the toadstools and flowers.
This is a delightful story that would make a fun read-aloud. Then you can offer an opportunity to add more adventures to Murphy McWoo’s nights.
