It’s time for Pirate Emma to start kindergarten. She has her treasure map and spy glass and she is ready to set sail with her favorite captain, Cap’n Chu. Cap’n Chu is really Ms. Chu, her preschool teacher, and Emma isn’t willing to be in a classroom with any other teacher.
When she shows up to kindergarten and Cap’n Chu isn’t there or any other pirates, Emma decides kindergarten isn’t for her and goes back to preschool. Even though the space ship in kindergarten looks fun and they have a guinea pig as a class pet, Emma is still skeptical.
Will Cap’n Chu convince Emma that since pirates don’t go to kindergarten, maybe an astronaut could? For any kids who are a bit apprehensive about starting the first day of school, this is such a silly way to get at some of their fears including a new teacher, new friends, and new classroom. Eda Kaban’s illustrations are fun and the kids are full of expressions…especially Emma. There is a lot going on in the classrooms on the pages, much like a real kindergarten classroom.
The silly pirate theme and spunky Emma will show kids that school can be fun and having a little imagination might just make it even better.

I love that the pirate in this book is a girl! It sounds like a fun book that a lot of little ones can relate to.
