Fiction

All of the construction vehicles are off to a new job, a big job that will take all of them working together to finish. Kids familiar with the Good Night, Good Night Construction Site series will love the familiar characters coming together again in a new story.

With Sherri Duskey Rinker’s well-placed rhyming prose, onomatopoeias, and fun vehicle characters kids will find much to love in this new addition to the series. A new highway is being built near our house and this book would fit right in with young kids who love to watch construction vehicles at work. Each vehicle has an important job to do from Dump Truck that hauls away rock and dirt to Water Truck that keeps the air clear to Grader’s leveling out the bumps and grooves. Kids will not only love watching the new road come together, but they will learn about each vehicle and what their job entails.

Even when the road is finished, the job isn’t complete until lines are painted and signs are hung. Once cars and trucks start driving on the new road, all the construction vehicles can look back at a job well done. There is even something special for kids to look for in this book. Make sure to read the author’s note at the end about how road crews develop special paths and areas for wildlife to travel safely.

This is another winning addition to the much-loved series. Too bad a new road isn’t made as quickly as the one in this book though! But, you can reinforce to your kids that hard work takes time and when the job is done, it’s important to rest and get ready to move on to the next job. After reading this with your kids, see if you can find a road crew working in your area.
