All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I frequently learn from books sent during a historical period because usually the fictional story is based on real events.
So, I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and in the tags. There will be books from some of my favorite publishers like National Geographic, Phaidon, Chronicle Kids, Prestel, and many others.

OUR UNDERWATER WORLD
A First Dive into Oceans, Lakes, and Rivers

If you remember, I’ve shared previous books in this series, OUR WORLD and OUR SEASONS. OUR UNDERWATER WORLD, like the others, is a shaped board book that opens up to create a globe.
Kids of all reading levels can explore the underwater world by looking at the illustrations, reading the poetic verse, or reading the deeper explanation about that specific water habitat.
From the Congo River to a small pond or lake to the great wide ocean, all kinds of creatures live below the water. Some go back and forth between land and water and others never leave the safety of the water. There are some creatures that need salt water to live while others need fresh water. Underwater creatures can be minuscule while others are massive. But, they are all part of a delicate ecosystem that relies on each other to keep their homes safe and full of food and shelter from prey.
Our area is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in years and it is ever more evident that life is dependent on water…for crops, for various species, and for the creatures that live in the water. Streams and rivers are drying up and I’m left wondering where the trout fish or frogs and toads have gone. This book encourages readers to find bodies of water near them and learn about the creatures that call it home.
