Today is known as International “Talk Like a Pirate Day”, a day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. As well as talking like a pirate, you should definitely read some books about pirates and I’ve got the perfect one for you today. I’m also sharing a few other books at the bottom of the post perfect for celebrating all things pirates.

Pirate Pearl is sick of eating the tasteless hardtack biscuits and throws them overboard. Soon, Pearl and her sidekick parrot, Petunia are quite hungry. Eventually, they go in search of treasure and their map leads them to Farmer Fay’s potato farm.

Pirate Pearl has never eaten a potato. But, after tasting potato soup made by Farmer Fay, she wants to know more about this special and filling food. After the delicious meal, Farmer Fay takes Pirate Pearl out to the farm and teaches her all about growing potatoes. When Pirate Pearl goes back to her pirate ship, she can grow potatoes on her own.

This book makes for a fun read-aloud with Petunia’s squawking and Pearl’s pirate talk. Besides the silly pirate talk, there are real lessons about how to plant, harvest, and cook those tasty potato vittles. The end of the book includes tips for growing your own potatoes, recipes for Farmer Fay’s potato soup, and fun potato facts. Vividly colored illustrations with fun expressions will keep kids interested in the story as well.
