Think about if all of your friends suddenly decided to go south for the winter and you were left here all alone. There is no one to have dinner with. There is no one to play cards with. There is no one to go to parties with. That is what Badger feels like as the snow begins to blanket the forest.

The Most Beautiful Winter page

Badger has all these plans for winter. He is looking forward to a snowball fight with Bear, and sledding with Marmot. He can’t wait to celebrate Hedgehog’s birthday. Instead, all the friends are sleeping. So, Badger spends his days drawing, reading, and knitting. Then he goes back out and finds the friends are STILL sleeping. But while he is out, he finds the birds are outside having fun. Then he meets even more new friends like the rabbits, foxes, and raccoons. When spring arrives, Badger’s friends emerge from their homes ready to play, but they can’t find Badger. Where could he be?

Kids will learn about animals that hibernate during winter and those who don’t. The author shares information about the difference between torpor and hibernation in an author’s note at the end. Kids will also find Badger deciding that making new friends is better than being bored. Kids will be encouraged to make new friends after seeing how much fun Badger had with his new friends.

The author also shares a list of ideas to help animals in winter either in your own backyard or at a nearby nature center. Some of the ideas include hanging bird feeders, setting out water, and planting evergreen and fruit-bearing trees to provide shelter and food for animals all year. This lovely story is great for reading aloud during winter.
