Fiction
Bernard the bird thinks he is just like all his other bird friends until the day they all learn to fly. Then Bernard realizes he has unusually long wings…wings too long to allow him to fly. Bernard is frustrated and tries all kinds of things to make his wings work to fly, but he can’t. He is sad because he is missing out on all the fun. He is very lonely.
Then Bernard heard someone who seemed even sadder than him, an orangutan. Bernard wasn’t sure what to do to make him feel better, so he wrapped his long wings around the orangutan and gave him a big hug. Instantly, the orangutan felt better and so did Bernard. The next morning Bernard wakes up to quite a surprise.
Bernard’s feelings are so real and I think lots of kids have felt different or left out at some point. Even though Bernard wasn’t sure what his long wings were for, he soon found out and that led him to have many more friends and fun-filled days than he ever dreamed he could have.
The pastel-colored illustrations are simple and sweet, showing emotions through the character’s eyes and smiles. I love how all the different forest animals become Bernard’s friends and especially how the birds come back to help Bernard with his one big wish.
This is such a sweet story, perfect for Valentine’s Day or any time your child needs a story to brighten their day. Bernard sends a beautiful message of love and friendship to all the animal friends.
