Antarctica is the sixth continent and due to The Antarctic Treaty, signed in 1959, the continent does not belong to any one nation or country. Every country in the treaty can do research there as long as they abide by the rules and understand that Scientists are the privileged group that is allowed.
The author has joined the Polar Star, a special ship traveling through the icy waters and delivering scientists and supplies to the research stations. Everyone visiting the continent must be very careful not to bring in seeds and other pollution to the area that may cause harm to the species already living there.
This oversized book has full-page illustrations with short, informational paragraphs to keep kids interested in reading more. Kids will learn about the scientists who research Antarctica’s living things, including penguins, seals, whales, glaciers, and yes, even volcanoes. For the record, there are no polar bears in Antarctica. You can only find them in the Arctic.
I knew very little about Antarctica before reading this book but found it quite interesting and would love to learn more. I didn’t realize there were so many different penguin, seal, and whale species. I appreciated the pages that showed how each one is different. I’m a little partial to the Adélie Penguins. But, I bet kids will love learning about the Macaroni Penguins.
Join this thrilling adventure into the sparsely traveled continent of Antarctica. Kids will find the journey to be quite fascinating and wonder how the earliest explorers in the 1600s and 1800s even managed to find their way there through all the dangerous weather and ocean passages. Antarctica is an excellent adventure book for kids interested in science and geography.

All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn how to be better people or learn empathy from fictional stories too.
So, I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and in the tags. There will be books from some of my favorite publishers like National Geographic, plus, some from independent publishers. See them all, HERE.
