Toddlers love interactive features in books, but so do older kids. Finding ways to make learning fun and encourage them to interact with a book to find out more about a topic almost always leads to more interest in learning. The Ultimate Spotlight series does exactly that for elementary-aged kids.
Here in the Midwest, we don’t know very much about volcanoes as there aren’t any near us. But the process of a volcano erupting and how they are formed are still taught in science classes here. Volcanoes are essentially a mountain that has formed from the molten rock that rose up to the surface from the depths of the Earth. Kids learn this on the very first page and can pull the tab to pull apart two flaps to show how the molten rock or magma risings to the surface.
Every page of the book has some sort of interactive feature, like the pop-up stratovolcano or shield volcano. Or there will be pull-tabs to see a feature of a volcano change or a flap to lift and read more about a particular key term. The pages are a heavier and thicker cardboard style to withstand the interaction with the pages. The illustrations are equal to textbook quality and the fact boxes throughout the page encourage kids to keep reading more.
My mom had an opportunity to fly over an erupting volcano in Hawaii a few years ago, stating that it was quite an amazing experience. I learned a lot about volcanoes reading this book and it would be an asset to any elementary science classroom or homeschool library.
