All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I frequently learn from books sent during a historical period because usually the fictional story is based on real events.
So, I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and in the tags. There will be books from some of my favorite publishers like National Geographic, Phaidon, Chronicle Kids, Prestel, and many others.

Kids may know that you leave the house (or leave the living room) and go to your job every weekday, but they may not know what a “job” is. Kids might think a superhero is a job, but that isn’t a real job. Or there are big dream jobs like Lego builder or video game tester, they exist but are rare. This book explores all kinds of jobs, where they do their job tasks, what time of day, and what that job entails.
I loved the pages that showed how books are made and how you become an author. Each job focus offers lots of illustrations, a step-by-step process, and a question/answer area. The end of each section offers a review of the material the child has just read and learned about. The illustrations are realistic and also show lots of diversity. The fact sections and labels are brief but informative.
Reading this book may introduce them to jobs they maybe didn’t know anything about like a ski patroller, a warehouse worker for deliveries, or an aircraft mechanic. The categories of jobs include Helping People jobs, Recreation, Medical and Rescue Workers, Making and Selling Products, and Out and About. Then each category is divided into even more sections. Out and About includes Airports, Restaurants, Beaches, Zoos, Mountains, and more.

Trains and Rail services have been in the news a lot lately and kids might have questions about how trains work. Starting with the history of trains from the early 1800s to freight trains and passenger trains today, illustrations and brief facts will give kids a great introduction.
From there, kids will learn about what goes on at the train station both on the platform and behind the scenes, as well as taking a journey on a train, and all the different kinds of trains around the world. Questions on each page go more in-depth on specific topics like where trains get repaired, how a train gets on the track (very precisely), and even about underwater trains.
If your family is taking an Amtrak or other train vacation or even planning to visit a Polar Express Train this Christmas, be sure to read this book with your kids.

Summer is here which means a lot of families around here like to take their boats on the lakes or rivers in the area. But, there is so much more to boats than just leisure activities. This book covers all kinds of boats and ships used for different purposes, like transport, fishing, moving products, and the military. Kids will learn about the various shipping boats and the routes they need to take. They will also learn about various jobs on the water like cruise ships, law enforcement, ferry operators, or water rescue.
The illustrations show the various parts of a boat or ship, the jobs and placement of people on these boats and ships and the brief texts explain how it all works. The end of the book shares all kinds of boats and ships from the past to the present and all around the world.
Questions about pirates, who owns the seas, and what is a tide are answered throughout the book in simple but informative ways. A great book for the water lover in your house.
