summer read to learn

All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I frequently learn from books sent during a historical period because usually the fictional story is based on real events.

So, I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and in the tags. There will be books from some of my favorite publishers like National Geographic, Phaidon, Chronicle Kids, Prestel, and many others.

5,000 AWESOME FACTS (ABOUT ANIMALS!)

Published: September 6, 2022

Publisher: National Geographic Kids

Non-Fiction

Does your child love learning about animals? Consider purchasing this book now for their birthday or Christmas. This is an oversized book that is PACKED with really fascinating facts about animals…5,000 to be exact. I can’t even begin to explain how many interesting things I learned about animals while reading through this book.

The facts about animals are divided into categories and you might find fifteen facts on a page or fifty or even a hundred. Because the facts are brief, kids can read one category or several in one sitting. The graphics make the reading easy with colorful fonts or words inside colored blocks. Sprinkled among the facts are lots of amazing photos of animals as well.

In the news this week, there was a story about a baby giraffe that was born without spots at a zoo in Tennessee. It is quite rare but I also remembered reading about a rare white giraffe (born with almost all spots) in Kenya in 2020. I was also quite surprised to learn that giraffes only sleep 30 minutes a day!

The final 5,000th fact is featured all by itself with a full-page photo that is quite shocking to see when you turn the page. But, most kids will probably love it even though it isn’t a favorite animal of mine.

For kids who like behind-the-scenes type of information, the end of the book features the process of creating this book of facts and how it is kind of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle connecting all the various animal facts together to make a cohesive book. A complete index in the back of the book will help you find that one fact about a blobfish that they want to tell their friend.

For the fact-lover and/or animal-lover in your life, this is THE BOOK to give them. The team at National Geographic Kids has outdone themselves with this one!
