All summer I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them a new interest to learn about. Most of the time these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too. I frequently learn from books sent during a historical period because usually the fictional story is based on real events.

After last week’s 100º+ temps here in Iowa, it is hard to imagine our planet being much hotter, but 250 million years ago, it was. Our planet was hot and humid and only had one continent “supercontinent”, not seven, called Pangaea. This was when dinosaurs began.
From the world before dinosaurs to when they ruled the world to a dinosaur family tree, dinosaur fans will love all the specific details related to all things dinosaurs. This oversized, hardcover book features full-page-spread illustrations of dinosaurs, fact boxes about each dinosaur, pronunciations, the specific periods the dinosaurs lived in, and where they lived.
Since I grew up right next to a river, we often found fossils and arrowheads along the river. But, sadly, never a dinosaur fossil. But dinosaur fossils have been found in numerous spots in North America, especially in the Western part of the country. Paleontologists like Dr. Steve Brusatte have curated this book to make sure it contains all the dinosaur details and up-to-date information including recent dinosaur discoveries. Plus, cartography experts have created kid-friendly maps to show exactly where specific dinosaurs lived or where fossils have been found.
Over 75 prehistoric creatures are featured in this book. Dinosaur fans will find this to be a comprehensive book full of facts, illustrations, and even photos of actual fossils found. This book might just inspire your child to become a paleontologist. Three theories are listed at the end of the book explaining why dinosaurs disappeared. These theories can create an excellent discussion about which theory makes the most sense. A Dino Dictionary Table at the end of the book lists the names of dinosaurs, the meaning of their name, the time period they lived in, where they lived, how tall they were, and what group they belonged to.
