All summer, I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them something new to learn about. Most of the time, these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too.

Another great series from Twirl is the Ultimate Spotlight series. I’ve shared several of the books HERE and the kids love reading them as well. With interactive features like mini-books to open, flaps to pull or lift, and dials to spin, kids can see how certain things come to life on the page.
See the process of a home being built from purchasing a lot to drawing up the house plans to digging a hole and laying the cement to the final stages of drywall and appliances. Kids will love watching the process. Maybe you know a family building a house, giving this book will make the process even more exciting for the kids.
Kids love to watch the building process so pack a lunch and drive to a neighborhood where houses are being built. Watch from a safe distance and see if you can find the pages that match the progress you are watching.
From the jobs on the scene of a house build to the equipment used to the uniforms people wear, everything is explained with kid-friendly definitions. Every page has an interactive feature like opening the flaps to see the steps of laying the cement floor of the house. Kids can help haul the shingles up to the roof by pulling the tab. Turn the dial to see each step in the process of laying tile flooring.
When the house is complete there is still landscaping to finish and then maintenance to keep the house looking nice. Accurate illustrations and diverse workers throughout the book can show kids various opportunities for trade work. Women are shown as the surveyor or mason. There are a lot of moving parts and stages to building a house and this book covers it and helps answer all the questions like “What’s happening now?” and “What will they be doing next?”.
