Summer Read-to-Learn

All summer, I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them something new to learn about. Most of the time, these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too.

I hope you will stay tuned to these posts. They will always have Summer Read-to-Learn in the title and the tags. There will be books from some of my favorite publishers like Feeding Minds Press, Chronicle Kids, Twirl, Templar Books, Candlewick Press, and others as well as books on all kinds of topics kids love to read and learn about. Be sure to stop by each week to see what book I’m sharing as part of my Summer Read-to-Learn series.

It can be scary to do something new. Is your child heading to preschool or Kindergarten for the first time? Maybe they are going to a camp where they won’t know anyone. Or are they taking their first swimming lessons? Is it time to try riding a bike without training wheels? All these experiences can be scary and sometimes don’t go very smoothly. Preparing your child by starting a conversation about being brave, no matter how the experience goes, will prepare your child for any outcome.

In HOW TO BE BRAVE, a child along with some animal friends, will encourage kids to agree to new adventures, help them to try something new, and if something goes wrong show them that they can get right back up and try again. Plus, they might meet some new friends along the way.

This empowering story along with gorgeous illustrations of animals and landscapes will help prepare your child for their next new adventure. This would make a great gift for a child starting school in the fall or for a family moving to a new town. The positive messages in this book can even encourage a parent to do their best and be brave!

Karl Newson is the author of the I AM A TIGER series among other children’s books. He lives in London with his family. Check out his website, HERE.

Clara Anganuzzi collaborated with Carl Newson by illustrating HOW TO HELP A FRIEND. She recalls drawing on every surface she could find as a child growing up in Seychelles. Clara enjoys using a mixture of traditional techniques to create narrative images and characters with subtle, gentle humor. She lives in Bristol, England.
