All summer, I’ll be sharing books for kids of all ages on topics that will interest them or offer them something new to learn about. Most of the time, these will be nonfiction books, but sometimes we can learn from fictional stories too.

Green plants fill the world and that’s a good thing. Green plants make the oxygen and food that animals and humans need to survive. It may look like a plant or tree is just standing there, not doing anything. But, there is a whole lot of action going on inside the plant, underneath the bark, or underground in the roots. Even the leaves are busy soaking up as much sunlight as possible.
Kids will be introduced to the process of photosynthesis and respiration. They will see a timeline of events from the first seaweed over one billion years ago to the first fish, insects, and land vertebrates arriving and forests beginning to grow. Even though this may seem like a big concept for kids to learn, Davies explains it easily. Combine her lessons with the intricately detailed illustrations and kids will soon be talking about plant science at the dinner table.
Plants can’t do all of this work on their own. Other living things must help the plants do their jobs. Bees need to help with pollination and animals help to spread seeds. Even plants in the ocean contribute to the air we breathe. Everyone must work together to keep Earth working the way it is supposed to. Unfortunately, pollution and cutting down too many forests means our planet is under threat. Remember, for all kinds of living things to continue to be on this earth, Green needs to be the most important color!
Nicola Davies is a zoologist and award-winning author whose many books for children include Surprising Sharks, illustrated by James Croft, Extreme Animals, illustrated by Neal Layton, and Gaia Warriors, as well as several titles illustrated by Emily Sutton, including Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes, Many: The Diversity of Life on Earth, and Grow: Secrets of Our DNA. She lives in Wales.
Emily Sutton graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in illustration. She is the illustrator of Tiny Creatures: The World of Microbes, Many: The Diversity of Life on Earth, Grow: Secrets of Our DNA, and A First Book of the Sea, all by Nicola Davies, as well as The Christmas Eve Tree by Delia Huddy and Betty and the Mysterious Visitor by Anne Twist. In addition to illustrating picture books, she paints, sculpts, and designs prints. Emily Sutton lives in York, England.
