This is exactly the kind of book I loved as a kid and the kind of book I purchased when our kids were younger. This is the kind of activity book that parents can feel good about getting for their kids. Your child won’t even know they are learning while having fun on the pages of this book!
Your child will travel through seven different animal habitats by participating in numerous activities including dot-to-dots, doodles, mazes, seek-and-finds, and outside-the-box activities for each habitat. The pages take the child on a journey from the desert to the ocean to the mountains to the forest and more featuring the animals they would encounter in that habitat. Your child can essentially explore the pages and have fun while learning about the animals on the pages.
The pages are a heavyweight paper to hold up to young hands turning the pages and writing on them. For each habitat, there is a fold-out section that allows children the chance to seek-and-find or place the included stickers on the pages.
There are opportunities for coloring and other activities. I love how there are bits of learning on the coloring pages telling kids, for example, that bluebirds sing as many as 500 songs an hour. There are also Did You Know facts throughout the pages.
Each section ends with an Outside-the-Box activity that kids can do with their parents that goes along with the habitat the child was learning about. My favorite activity was making a giraffe out of the child’s handprint. The animal illustrations are realistic, yet cartoonish. They remind me of animal characters in Pixar movies. They seem to have a personality on the pages and kids will find them adorable.
I would guess the activities in this book are appropriate for lower elementary aged kids with some activities needing parent help for the younger kids and other activities, like the dot-to-dot too easy for the older 2nd-3rd graders. But, I remember liking dot-to-dots even if I knew exactly how to do them anyway.
This is one of those really awesome books that I want to give to every kid I know. I highly recommend adding it to your gift lists for younger kids you know. If you have to take a younger child along to wait to pick up an older child, give them this book rather than handing them a device! Homeschooling parents would also find this a useful resource!
