It is officially two months until Christmas which means there is no better day to tell you about a wonderful Christmas story that you can read every day in December.
First of all, this book is perfect for gift-giving. The hardcover version is just beautiful even if you take off the flap-cover. The pages are heavy with gorgeous and richly-colored illustrations. Just thumbing through the pages makes you feel like this is a special book, only to take out during a special time of the year.
The author explains at the beginning that this should be read during the month of December, starting on December 1st, and reading a chapter a day until December 25th, when you read the last half-chapter. He suggests making it a family activity. If you have older kids in your home, having each child take turns reading the story would be a great activity. Having the parents read the story to the family all while snuggled in bed also makes for perfect bedtime reading. But, the end of each chapter offers an activity to do, which means either doing the activity before reading the story or saving it for the next day if you read the story at bedtime.
Winston is a mouse that is out shivering in the cold when a letter blows into his path. This happens on Day 2 and knocks Winston over. He is at first excited to use the letter as a warm bed for the night. But, since Winston was a good reader, he noticed the letter was addressed to Santa Claus! So even though he wanted to snuggle up in that letter, he couldn’t do that to a precious letter written to Santa Claus. Winston sets off an adventure to try to deliver this special letter.
Winston saw some beautiful things, met some interesting characters, and had some close calls. Kids will be excited to read or hear about the next step in Winston’s adventure while hoping he can deliver the precious letter to Santa. I think kids and parents will find the ending to be quite special and worth the twenty-five-day wait.
Some of the activities suggested in the book include having kids write their own letter to Santa, make wrapping paper and gift tags, make a gingerbread man, learn about Christmas traditions around the world, host a party and make party food, and make Christmas crackers.
Make sure you have this book ready to begin reading on December 1st for every little reader in your life!

Books make the best gifts. I may be a little biased, but I love giving books as gifts. I think they offer a personal connection. You are either saying, I loved this book and I think you will too. Or, I know you love cats, science, history, etc so I thought this would be a great book for you. It means you have listened to them when they have shared something with you and that you took the time to notice. To see all the posts in this series, click HERE.
